MP Firas Al-Maslamawi confirmed on Saturday that the talk about the withdrawal of US forces from some bases inside Iraq is nothing but part of a plan to redeploy and delude the Iraqi street into believing that there is an intention to withdraw. He stressed that national sovereignty cannot be achieved with the presence of foreign forces under any pretext.
Al-Maslamawi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma that “Washington is working according to a policy of military redeployment inside Iraqi territory, by evacuating some secondary sites and strengthening other more important ones, in an attempt to camouflage its military presence and reduce popular and political pressure demanding its complete departure.”
He added that “this move does not reflect any real intention to withdraw, but rather falls within a long-term strategy to maintain US influence inside Iraq under various pretexts,” noting that “the Iraqi people are aware of these maneuvers and will not be deceived by the media images promoted by some parties.”
The MP explained that “the security forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces have proven over the past years their full ability to protect the borders and confront any external threat without relying on any foreign support,” stressing that “the Iraqis have made great sacrifices to protect their land and sovereignty.”
Al-Maslamawi stressed that “the next phase will be a real test for the political forces and parliament to take decisive steps to end the foreign presence once and for all and establish full, undiminished national sovereignty.”
