MP Thaer al-Jubouri called on Friday for a tougher stance against the repeated absences of a significant number of members of parliament, asserting that this has contributed to obstructing the passage of more than 30 laws during the current parliamentary session.

Al-Jubouri told Al-Maalouma, “The continued absence of a number of MPs undermines parliamentary work and raises questions about the effectiveness of their representation, especially since one of the most important duties of a parliamentarian is to attend and participate in sessions and vote on laws that serve the state and society.”

He added that “the absences of a large number of members have broken the quorum in several sessions, leading to the postponement of voting on more than 30 laws so far, including 10 laws that were ready for a vote in the last session.” He emphasized that “these laws represent citizens’ rights and cannot be suspended due to repeated absences.”

Al-Jubouri stressed that “there is an urgent need for real measures against MPs who do not commit to attending and participating in parliamentary sessions.”
