The US Embassy in Baghdad announced on Wednesday that scheduled passport and visa services at US embassies and consulates abroad will continue during the budget hiatus, as circumstances permit.

The embassy confirmed in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that it “will not update the official account until full operations resume, except for urgent information related to safety and security.”

The embassy invited citizens wishing to obtain more information about services and the current work status to visit the official website .

The United States entered a federal shutdown early Wednesday morning after Congress failed to pass a partial budget extension. This move will result in a shutdown of many federal departments and agencies and force their employees to furlough.

The U.S. government has shut down most of its operations as deep partisan divisions prevent Congress and the White House from reaching a funding agreement, sparking a protracted and arduous crisis that could result in the loss of thousands of federal government jobs.

There was no clear way out of the impasse, as agencies warned that the 15th government shutdown since 1981 would delay the release of the closely watched September jobs report, slow air travel, suspend scientific research, withhold pay for U.S. troops, and result in the suspension of 750,000 federal employees at a daily cost of $400 million.
