Independent MP Hadi Al-Salami accused the Speaker of Parliament on Monday of “preventing the interrogation of a number of executive officials,” most notably Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
Al-Salami told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the Speaker of Parliament deliberately obstructed the interrogation of ministers and the Prime Minister after refusing to include MPs’ requests to host and question some figures, which represents a clear encroachment on the Council’s powers.” He pointed out that “the most notable violations relate to the failure to submit budget tables to Parliament on the specified dates, which undermined the principle of transparency and weakened legislative oversight.”
He added that “Parliament has lost its true oversight role due to its presidency’s politicization of oversight files and its protection of the government from accountability,” noting that “this behavior poses a threat to democratic life and gives the executive authority free rein to commit new violations without accountability.”
It is noteworthy that escalating disagreements have recently emerged between political forces regarding the interrogation file, amid accusations that the parliament presidency is obstructing the oversight role in exchange for passing political deals within the council.
