At a time when the internal and external race over who deserves to remain in power is intensifying, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is intensifying his behind-the-scenes efforts, in an attempt to garner American support that would enable him to secure a second term. However, these efforts are facing a wall of coldness in Washington, where the US administration has not yet shown any intention of officially receiving al-Sudani, amid signs of declining trust and interaction with him.
Informed political sources confirmed to Al-Maalouma Agency that “over the past months, huge sums of money have been pumped into the hands of parties linked to al-Sudani through pressure channels (lobbies) inside the US capital, some of which work on media promotion, while others seek to secure a mere symbolic meeting with former US President Donald Trump, during events or side meetings.
” The sources added that “some groups linked to al-Sudani offered diplomatic and economic concessions in exchange for arranging an ‘honorary’ meeting with influential American figures, but the noticeable American neglect suggests that the current administration is not interested in supporting al-Sudani politically under the pretext of the complexity of internal Iraqi affairs.”
Observers believe that Al-Sudani’s obsession with external appearances and scoring media points that serve his ambitions for a second term has recently caused him to lose his political balance and led to inconsistent positions on sensitive issues that negatively impact Iraq’s sovereignty. The prime minister is shifting from a decision-maker to a recipient of opportunities, which opens the door to broader foreign intervention.
While Al-Sudani insists on improving his image within Iraq through his actions, the reality indicates that his chances of renewing his term are actually eroding, amid popular discontent. Will a “photo op with Trump” save him from falling? Or will reality decide the outcome before his campaign for a second term begins?
