As the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly is held in New York to discuss poverty, sustainable development, and economic crises, the official Iraqi delegation, headed by President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, has become the talk of the Iraqi street after being spotted enjoying a lavish shopping spree in Manhattan, instead of seriously engaging in the country’s crucial issues.
Informed sources revealed to Al-Maalouma Agency that members of the delegation, including numerous advisors and escorts, were seen frequenting international shopping malls featuring expensive perfume, clothing, and electronics stores, at a time when the people are suffering from power outages, water shortages, deteriorating health services, and rising rates of poverty and unemployment.
The scandal sparked widespread public anger, raising urgent questions: How can the delegation allow itself to spend state funds on luxuries while citizens lack the basics of a decent standard of living? Has Iraqi diplomacy transformed from a platform for protecting national interests into a platform for shopping and displaying luxury?
