Former Kirkuk MP, Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, warned on Wednesday against the continued smuggling of oil from the Kurdistan Region, regarding an agreement to restart the oil pipeline through Turkey.
Jaafar said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, that “the smuggling of the region’s oil negatively affects the national economy and directly impacts the state’s financial revenues, as well as causing problems with Iraq’s share set by OPEC.”
He added, “The resumption of exports through the State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) to the Turkish port of Ceyhan may contribute to reducing smuggling, but it will not end the problem unless the government takes firm measures to monitor and prevent these operations.” He pointed out that “influential partisan groups within the region, with the support or complicity of external parties, are behind the continued smuggling operations, which requires a clear and firm government position to put an end to these practices.”
