Parliamentary Services - 70 percent of projects are stalled and the government is drowning in debtAl-Maalouma/Exclusive..
Member of the Parliamentary Services Committee, Baqir Kazim, confirmed on Wednesday that the government projects file is suffering from major failures, noting that about 70% of projects are stalled in various governorates, including vital infrastructure projects such as water, sewage and roads.
Al-Saadi told Al-Maalouma Agency, “The current government has accumulated huge debts without a clear repayment mechanism, which reflects a state of confusion and an inability to manage resources optimally.” He pointed out that “these debts burden the state and hinder its obligations towards the service sectors.”
He pointed out that “a number of investment projects were referred to unsound companies that lack experience and competence, which led to the stumbling of achievement and the early halt of many of them.”
He pointed out that “some contracts were concluded in an ill-considered manner, which missed real opportunities to improve the service reality.”
He pointed out that “the projects currently being implemented do not live up to the required level of efficiency and quality, as citizens suffer from the continued deterioration of basic services despite the huge sums spent on this file.”
He continued, “The suspension of 70% of projects reflects a clear picture of the extent of the administrative and financial crisis the country is going through, calling for a comprehensive review of the referrals and contracts file, and the development of realistic plans to restart stalled projects, while holding the negligent parties accountable.”
He considered that “the continuation of this reality will lead to more popular resentment and a loss of confidence in the government’s ability to manage the state,” calling for “the necessity of seeking the assistance of solid and experienced companies, and obligating them to a specific timetable for completing projects.”
