Member of Parliament Raed Al-Maliki called on the judiciary on Sunday to open an urgent investigation into the accusations made by the former governor of Wasit, Mohammed Jamil Al-Mayahhi, against Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, regarding the exploitation of the Kut fire incident for political and electoral purposes.
Al-Maliki said in a statement received by Al-Maalouma Agency, “If these accusations are true, they represent a major political and social scandal, as it is unconscionable to exploit a humanitarian disaster that befell our people in Wasit to achieve political gains.”
He confirmed that “the Legal Committee will officially request the judiciary to investigate these allegations,” stressing that “silence or laxity in accountability is unacceptable.”
He added, “Just as we previously demanded expanding the investigation to hold accountable the local and central authorities responsible for the Kut disaster, today we also demand holding accountable everyone who sought to exploit it politically or bargain over it.”
