On Friday, Member of Parliament Raed al-Maliki considered his decision to dismiss the head of the Sunni Endowment Diwan, Mishaan al-Khazraji, and the praise he received from Sovereignty Party leader Khamis al-Khanjar, as “a strengthening of the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence in Iraq.”
Al-Maliki’s comments came in response to Al-Khanjar’s tweet on Twitter, in which he welcomed Al-Sudani’s approval of the Fiqh Council’s nominations for the presidency of the Sunni Endowment, considering it “an indication that Al-Sudani has begun to expand his support for Al-Khanjar in a religious direction, not just economic and investment-related.”
In a Facebook post, the MP called for the Sunni Endowment’s presidency to be kept away from political interference, even if it takes on an institutional religious character. His remarks hinted at the influence of a political entity espousing the Brotherhood’s ideology on some Sunni religious institutions.
He added, “We have no problem with the Brotherhood as a political movement or orientation, just like other parties, trying to gain influence and operate in the political arena. However, if it takes control of the Sunni religious landscape in Iraq and becomes a religious authority, then the danger lies there, because it will exploit religion for its own interests and agenda, while believing in external connections.”
Al-Maliki stressed that “Al-Sudani must be aware and consider the seriousness of his decisions and policies, which are based on a narrow vision aimed at achieving temporary and fleeting interests, such as a second term.”
He pointed out that Iraq is still in the founding and formation phase, and that the potential for transformation is very possible. What external powers have been unable to achieve through hard power, they may be able to achieve through soft power, through misguided influences and policies.
Al-Maliki also emphasized that the path to stability in Iraq lies in supporting moderate forces politically and religiously on the Sunni level, and adhering to the line and approach of the supreme religious authority in Najaf on the Shiite level.
He concluded his remarks by saying, “Therefore, Shiite forces must review and discuss Al-Sudani’s policies in this regard, halt his support for the Brotherhood’s tendencies, and refrain from responding to any external pressure in this direction.”
