The threads of the largest corruption files in Iraq are being revealed day after day, as mobile phone companies (Zain and Asiacell) continue to manipulate the fate of billions of dinars owed to the state treasury, amid suspicious official silence and political collusion that raises major question marks.
Reports from the Financial Oversight and the Ministry of Communications indicate debts worth billions of dinars in the stomachs of these companies, estimated at “one hundred billion and 285 million dinars owed by Zain Telecom Company, and fifty-five billion and 594 million dinars owed by Asiacell.”
Despite these enormous sums, the higher authorities did nothing, leaving the money in the stomachs of the companies, while citizens suffer the bitterness of the worst communications and internet service in the region.
The current Speaker of Parliament, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, when he was deputy head of the government program follow-up committee, led legal campaigns against mobile phone companies, demanding that their licenses be suspended and that they be forced to pay their debts.
However, after he assumed the presidency, the situation completely changed, and the voice calling for accountability disappeared, opening the door to suspicions about suspicious financial and political understandings with these companies.
The issue does not stop with Parliament, as fingers are pointing at Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and his office, who face accusations of covering up this file and turning a blind eye to debt collection in exchange for financial interests and influence deals.
Citizens believe that these companies are plundering Iraq’s money without deterrence, while in return they provide the worst telecommunications and internet services at high prices
. This will strengthen their relations with centers of political influence
and transform the mobile phone companies file in Iraq into a political and financial bombshell, revealing the extent of collusion between Parliament and the government to protect the interests of companies at the expense of the state.
The question remains: Will the judiciary move to save the looted billions, or will the file remain shrouded in secrecy due to the political influence of these companies, supported by the heads of Parliament and the Council of Ministers due to corruption?
