Economic expert Safwan Qusay confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq desires to reconsider oil exports and make them in line with population ratios. He explained that this desire boils down to reducing exports to member states in exchange for increasing them to Iraq according to the population ratios of each OPEC country.
Qusay told Al-Maalomah, “Iraq desires to reconsider oil quotas within OPEC, so that these quotas are arranged based on the population of each member state and on the basis of storage capacity and proven reserves.”
He added, “Iraq possesses no less than 160 billion barrels of proven oil, and its population is continuously growing, as the population has reached more than 45 million. Therefore, Iraq needs to reduce the quotas of some OPEC members and increase Iraq’s share in this organization.”
He explained that “increasing Iraq’s share in exchange for reducing some quotas contributes to stabilizing global oil market prices at their current rates,” noting that “the policy of the Ministry of Oil is in line with expanding export outlets towards the west and north and not relying solely on the southern outlets.”
