MP Thaer Makhif revealed on Sunday that more than 600 Turkish companies are operating in Iraq without any procedures or restrictions. He noted that this reflects the imbalance in dealing with the drought crisis affecting 90% of the country, particularly the central and southern governorates.
In an interview with Al-Maalouma, Makhif said, “The lack of water flowing from Ankara toward the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, due to the presence of dozens of dams, is the most prominent factor exacerbating the drought crisis,” noting that “water must be a fundamental pillar of Iraq’s national security perspective.”
He added, “Dealing with the principle of balancing economic interests without linking them to Iraq’s water interests puts the country in a position of weakness, especially with the decline in water releases from Ankara over the past months, which has had severe repercussions across large areas in the central and southern governorates and has led to a partial wave of displacement.”
He pointed out that “reconsidering economic and water policies must serve Iraq’s interests in general, to ensure that the economic paper is invested in securing the country’s water interests.”
