The Ministry of Transport has prepared a plan to develop the maritime transport sector by opening the doors to partnerships and investment with specialized regional and international companies, in addition to building eight giant ships to support trade exchange, coinciding with the launch of the Grand Faw Port project.
The Ministry’s media office director, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah that his ministry is working tirelessly to develop the country’s maritime sector, which will coincide with the launch of the Grand Faw Port project. This requires the introduction of the latest global innovations and technologies in this regard, in order to keep pace with developments taking place in the maritime sector.
He explained that, in this context, an expanded plan has been developed, including opening the door to partnerships and investment with international and regional companies to develop the maritime transport sector. He confirmed that his ministry is accepting offers to work on a joint operating system, which will enable the country’s fleet to transport government goods and increase trade exchange in the coming period.
Al-Safi revealed that the country is planning to build eight new vessels, awaiting the necessary approvals from the Council of Ministers. These vessels will support the country’s six-strong maritime fleet, three of which have a capacity of 14,000 tons: the Basra, the Muthanna, and the Hadbaa, operating in international waters. The Baghdad, with a capacity of 10,000 tons, is dedicated to transporting containers, in addition to two small service vessels operating in territorial waters.
