MP Haider Al-Salami considered, on Tuesday, that the passage of the ambassador list in parliament by a limited group of representatives represents “a stab in the back of Iraqi diplomacy.”
Al-Salami said in a statement to / Al-Maalouma /: “Most of the names that were voted on do not have the required qualifications to be the face of Iraq in the diplomatic corps, which weakens the country’s external presence.”
He added that “the expansion in the appointment of ambassadors in recent years and the increase in their financial allocations cost the budget millions of dollars annually.”
He stressed that “the approval of this list comes at a time when the budget is suffering from a large deficit, the suspension of important service and development projects, in addition to high rates of poverty and unemployment, and the state’s continued dependence on oil as its sole resource amid fluctuating global prices.”
It is noteworthy that the “Echo Iraq” Observatory revealed that the Iraqi ambassador receives $12,000 per month, in addition to allocations, luxury housing, and a service staff, at a time when the number of ambassadors has increased from 26 to 106, which has doubled the burden on the budget.
