Chairman of the National Investment Commission, Haider Makiya, stated on Wednesday that investment in Iraq needs to broaden its horizons, as growth in this sector cannot be achieved in an isolated environment.
This came in a speech he delivered during a workshop on security and investment held at the Commission’s building in the capital, Baghdad, and attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent.
In his speech, Makiya said that experience has proven that when an investor enters a country, he seeks to ensure the security of his capital, and that security is not only a factor that helps investment, but is also a condition for its existence and continuity.
He added that the Authority is responsible for providing investment opportunities in collaboration with security and executive institutions to protect projects from the laying of the foundation stone until they are operational.
Makiya also emphasized that successful investment cannot thrive in an isolated environment. Rather, we require the cooperation of the entire state and a strategic framework between the security services and executive institutions.
In turn, Saad Maan, head of the Security Media Cell in the Joint Operations, said in a speech he delivered during the workshop that security and investment are two sides of the same coin, and neither can succeed without the other.
He stressed that security institutions are working diligently to provide the safe environment required by foreign and local investors, noting that the need for integration among all state institutions, particularly the security and economic ones, has become imperative.
Maan continued by saying that the work of Iraq’s security services is not limited to security alone, noting that coordination between relevant agencies to achieve investment is a crucial factor in building a robust environment amid regional and international competition to attract capital.
The head of the Security Media Cell concluded his remarks by saying: “The country possesses the capabilities and opportunities that qualify it to become a global investment hub.”
