Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Tuesday that the financial value of Iraq’s imported goods and commodities has reached more than $70 billion.

This came in statements he made on the sidelines of his visit to the Border Ports Authority building, where he met via video conference with port directors, in the presence of the Chairman of the Ports Authority, the Directors-General, and the Advisors.

Al-Sudani said, “We have imports exceeding $70 billion, according to estimates from the Ministries of Trade and Planning, and there are supposed to be significant and clear revenues.”

He stressed that the government’s program has set a target of 20% of non-oil revenues, as it represents the gateway to success through border crossings.

Al-Sudani also pointed out that non-oil revenues will benefit the health, education, and housing sectors, protect national production, and contribute to the development of the agriculture, industry, and other sectors.

The Prime Minister addressed foreign currency transfers abroad, saying, “We have taken a series of measures in the area of financial transfers and linked them to the operation of ports.”

He stressed that there must be a comparison between the foreign currency sold by the Central Bank and the transfers it makes to banks and merchants for imports, and that this must be matched with the fees collected. He noted that this mechanism will be implemented on December 1.
