The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Saturday that excavation and development work on the Grand Faw Port’s navigation channel is continuing. This project is part of strategic projects aimed at enhancing maritime traffic and facilitating the entry of large vessels into the port.

The director of the navigation canal project, Mukhallad Abdul-Hussein Ali, told Shafaq News Agency, “The navigation canal is 23 kilometers long, 200 meters wide, and reaches a depth of 19.8 meters according to the approved design, allowing the safe passage of large ships and facilitating efficient loading and unloading operations.”

He added that “the excavation results from the canal to date have reached more than 57 million cubic meters, and have been removed and deposited in designated areas as part of a plan to maintain uninterrupted work and preserve the marine environment surrounding the port.”

Ali pointed out that “technical personnel have completed the construction of two marine platforms specialized in studying weather conditions, and another hydrographic platform to measure current speeds, rainfall, humidity, winds, pressure, and tidal movements.” He noted that “the platforms are linked to a special system within the port to provide engineering teams with accurate information.”

He continued, “The information collected by the platforms will be sent directly to the communications department of the Iraqi General Company for Ports, forming part of a modern monitoring system that supports operational decision-making and ensures the safety of maritime navigation within the canal and port.”

The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced last Monday the commencement of the submergence phase of the fifth concrete section of the submerged tunnel at the Grand Faw Port, dubbed “Azal.” This section will be the first to pass through the deepest section of water in the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, a step described as a pivotal step in the project’s various stages.
