MP: Government silence on US withdrawal is suspicious and dangerous

MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi called on the Iraqi government on Thursday to issue an official statement clarifying its position on the announced withdrawal of US forces from the country. He noted that Washington’s movements from Ain al-Asad Air Base toward other bases in Erbil raise serious doubts about its intentions.
“The rapid deployment of US forces to the region without any official clarification from Baghdad reflects plans that may be hidden from the government and public view,” al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma. “The region is behaving as if it were a separate entity from the state, and this complicates the security and political landscape.”
He pointed out that “the absence of an official statement from the government regarding the withdrawal opens the door to widespread speculation and questions, especially given the ongoing US attempts to reposition its forces under various pretexts, most notably advisory missions.”
Earlier, Hussein Hashem, a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, renewed his demand for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Iraq, especially American forces, indicating that this would take place at the beginning of next September.
