A leader in the United Anbar Alliance, Mohammed al-Dulaimi, revealed on Monday that Sunni parties, led by the Progress Party headed by Mohammed al-Halbousi, oppose the decision to schedule the withdrawal of international coalition forces from the Ain al-Asad base in western Anbar.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Sunni political parties, especially the Progress Party led by Mohammed al-Halbousi, oppose the withdrawal of international coalition forces from their bases in Iraq,” noting that “these parties believe this will harm their interests.”
He continued, “There are secret agreements between these parties to reject the withdrawal plan in exchange for pressuring the central government to obtain political and material gains.”
Al-Dulaimi added, “Al-Halbousi has long since refrained from adopting a vote on the US troop withdrawal resolution, despite demands from a number of MPs, due to political disagreements with Baghdad.”
He pointed out that “these parties’ interests require supporting the presence of international coalition forces at Ain al-Asad base and in other provinces.”
He pointed out that “no Sunni parties have expressed any public stance calling for the withdrawal of international coalition forces from Iraq.”
