The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Monday the commencement of the submergence phase of the fifth concrete section of the submerged tunnel at the Grand Faw Port, dubbed “Azal.” The section will be the first to pass through the deepest water section of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, a step described as a pivotal milestone in the project’s various phases.

The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The fifth section of the tunnel, known as Azal, has reached the submersion stage in preparation for its placement at the bottom of the canal. This is a very important stage as it crosses the deepest section of the Khor Al-Zubair waterway, which gives it special weight in the implementation process.”

He added that “the submergence process will be carried out using advanced systems to control buoyancy, balance, and weight, under the direct supervision of engineering teams to ensure precise maneuvering and installation.” He noted that “the completion of this phase brings the length of the completed tunnel to 819 meters, which will strengthen the project’s progress toward reaching the final closure stages within the planned schedule.”

The “submerged tunnel” is one of the vital projects in the Grand Faw Port, located in the south of Basra Governorate, and connects Faw to the Umm Qasr area in southern Iraq by sea .

Earlier today, the General Company for Iraqi Ports announced that the completion rate of the road linking the Grand Faw Port and Umm Qasr Port had reached 97%, indicating that it will improve transportation between the two sites.
