Political observer Haitham al-Khazali criticized, on Wednesday, the US State Department’s statements rejecting the security memorandum of understanding signed by Iraq with Iran, stressing that Iraq is a fully sovereign state and free to manage its foreign relations away from the tutelage of any party, especially the United States.
In a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, al-Khazali said, “The United States has clearly overstepped its bounds through its interference in Iraqi affairs, whether through its objection to the legislation of the Popular Mobilization Forces law or its recent rejection of the security memorandum of understanding with Iran.”
He added, “Washington must realize its size and stop using the logic of hegemony with the Iraqi people and other peoples.”
He pointed out that “the era of unipolarity is over, and we now live in a multipolar world,” considering that “the US State Department’s statements regarding its rejection of the agreement with Iran are completely unacceptable, and Washington must abandon the logic of arrogance, because Iraq is an independent, sovereign state and free to build its foreign relations.”
On Tuesday evening, the US State Department spokeswoman expressed her country’s rejection of the security memorandum of understanding that Iraq recently signed with Iran.
