The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee warned on Wednesday that the storage capacity of six major dams in Iraq has reached its lowest level in decades, considering that the country is facing a severe water crisis that threatens food and water security.
Committee member Thaer Al-Jubouri told Al-Maalouma Agency that “the water situation in Iraq’s six dams has reached an extremely critical stage, and is the lowest in many years,” noting that the committee’s previous warnings about the danger of drought were not random, but rather based on an objective and accurate reading.
Al-Jubouri added that the committee called on the Iraqi government to “take a strong and pressure-filled stance towards Ankara, and to use all diplomatic and legal means to ensure increased water releases in the Tigris and Euphrates river basins, especially with the worsening crisis in the south and the middle Euphrates region.”
He pointed out that “international laws grant Iraq the right to obtain fair and equitable releases from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, sufficient to secure drinking water, operate desalination plants, and irrigate agricultural crops.”
Iraq is currently suffering from a severe drought crisis, exacerbated by Türkiye’s reduction of water supplies over the past few months, further complicating the water situation and threatening the lives of millions of Iraqis in various regions.
