A senior security source revealed on Wednesday details of the security agreement signed between Iraq and Iran, which has since been transformed into a security memorandum of understanding. He indicated that the recent agreement aims to strengthen security measures along the two countries’ shared borders.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The memorandum also includes addressing the Iranian opposition issue in northern Iraq and preventing the replication of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s experience in the region.” He noted that “the agreement aims to raise the level of security and intelligence coordination to mitigate any potential threats.”

The source added, “The memorandum includes mechanisms for exchanging intelligence information and organizing joint patrols, enhancing the two countries’ ability to confront any armed activity that threatens security and stability in border areas.”

Last Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the signing of a security memorandum of understanding with Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary-General Ali Larijani, regarding security coordination on the two countries’ shared border.

At a press conference, Larijani emphasized that signing a security memorandum of understanding with Iraq aims to prevent others from undermining the security of both countries.

Just 24 hours after the agreement, the US State Department expressed its rejection of the security memorandum of understanding recently signed between Iraq and Iran, affirming its opposition to any legislation that conflicts with US objectives and contradicts efforts to strengthen Iraq’s existing security institutions.
