An Iraqi parliamentarian revealed on Monday that dozens of candidates have been disqualified from the upcoming general elections on charges related to conduct, accountability, and corruption.

MP Amir Al-Maamouri told Shafaq News Agency that the article on good conduct and behavior in the electoral law, had it been applied in previous rounds, would have prevented some individuals from reaching the House of Representatives. He stressed that the High Elections Commission has so far excluded 66 candidates from the electoral race due to issues related to conduct and behavior, accountability and justice, and financial and administrative corruption.

Al-Maamouri added that the commission is in the process of issuing a new list of more than 75 candidates who will be excluded due to their affiliation with the Ba’ath Party and subject to accountability and justice procedures. He indicated that other lists will be issued later to exclude candidates on the basis of dishonorable cases and financial and administrative corruption.

He pointed out that “anyone covered by the general amnesty law will also be excluded from participating in the elections.”

Al-Maamouri also posted a video on his Facebook account, revealing details of the exclusion procedures.

On Sunday, the Independent High Electoral Commission decided to disqualify a number of candidates for the Iraqi parliamentary elections in November 2025.

Official documents relating to the exclusions revealed that the decision was made after verifying “the existence of criminal records against them relating to murder, bribery, forgery, fraud, as well as financial and administrative corruption.”
