An informed source revealed on Monday the most important discussions that took place during the meetings between Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and Iraqi officials during his visit to Baghdad.

The source told Shafaq News Agency, “Gathering the so-called axis of resistance in the region and rearranging its cards, along with Iraq’s political role in calming the situation in the region during the next phase, are among the most important files that Larijani brought with him to Baghdad.”

He added, “Larijani’s new mission requires rearranging the cards, especially after the axis’ leadership in the region was weakened. He also stressed the need to employ tools and redistribute tasks after the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq according to the agreed-upon withdrawal schedule, and to find an official and protocol-based formula for this.”

The source indicated that “Larijani will also discuss, in his meetings with Iraqi officials, the political situation and the rapid formation of a government that will achieve internal and regional stability, in addition to the importance of achieving balance in the political process because the international situation requires it.”

The source ruled out the possibility of Larijani meeting with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf, while stressing that “international understandings are imposing a new reality in the region based on the foundation of establishing a new Middle East.”

Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, arrived in Baghdad on Monday for a two-day official visit.

On Monday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the signing of a security memorandum of understanding with Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and emphasized Iraq’s support for the US-Iran dialogue.

Earlier, Ali Akbar Velayati, an advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader, revealed details of a recent phone call with Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition. The call centered on concerns that the disarmament issue would be transferred from Lebanese Hezbollah to the Popular Mobilization Forces.

This came in response to a question about similar plots orchestrated by the US against the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, during an interview conducted with the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, followed by Shafaq News Agency.

Velayati referred to a recent phone call he had with Nouri al-Maliki, whom he described as a “brave man” for having issued the death sentence for Saddam during his reign and expelling the “gang of hypocrites” from US forces in Iraq.

The Supreme Leader’s advisor said that Maliki confirmed during the call that the United States and Israel would move on from Lebanon to target the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq. “We agreed that Iran and Iraq would refuse to disarm Hezbollah in Lebanon or the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, and would stand in the way of that,” he added. “Had it not been for the Popular Mobilization Forces, the Americans would have swallowed Iraq. The Popular Mobilization Forces play the same role in Iraq that Hezbollah plays in Lebanon.”
