Iraq ranked third in the Arab world in importing solar panels from China during the first half of 2025.

According to the Washington-based Energy Research Unit, Iraq was the third Arab country to import solar panels from China during the first half of this year, supported by the launch of several new projects.

She added that Arab countries are working to exploit their sustainable natural resources, including some of the highest solar radiation in the world, to diversify their electricity mix and reduce their reliance on oil and gas.

In the first six months of this year, countries such as Iraq, Algeria, and Sudan joined the list of the top 10 Arab countries importing Chinese solar panels for the first time, while other countries, such as the Sultanate of Oman, dropped out.

She explained that Iraq jumped to third place among the Arab countries importing the most solar panels in the first half of this year, recording 0.95 gigawatts, compared to 0.14 gigawatts during the same period last year, representing an annual increase of 0.81 gigawatts.

She noted that Saudi Arabia topped the list of Arab countries importing the most solar panels during the first half of this year, given the momentum it is witnessing to accelerate the implementation of solar energy projects. It was followed by the UAE, then Iraq, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, and Lebanon.

A gigawatt (GW) equals one billion watts (1,000,000,000 watts), or 1,000 megawatts.
