Independent Kurdish politician Saman Ali explained on Saturday the stages of oil smuggling from the Kurdistan Region to Turkey.
Ali said in a statement to / Al-Maalomah / agency, “The process of smuggling oil from the Kurdistan Region begins with transporting it in tanker trucks designated for carrying petroleum derivatives. Then the second stage begins with filling the smuggled oil into barrels and transporting it in Mercedes (Actros) trucks owned by the ruling parties to disguise the fact that these trucks are loaded with commercial materials and goods designated for transporting goods from Iraq to Turkey.”
He added, “All stages of the smuggling operations are characterized by complete secrecy and are supervised by the ruling authority and protected by the region’s guards. All meetings of the smuggling networks take place in the governorates of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah and are characterized by complete secrecy.” He indicated that “the process of filling the smuggled oil into barrels takes place in areas close to the border strip with Turkey and is subject to strict security measures that prevent access to them by any force outside the control of the region.”
He continued, “Turkey has prior knowledge of the locations of the stages of Iraqi oil smuggling, but it turns a blind eye to these movements in the eyes of the public because of the joint coordination that allows the regional government to continue smuggling operations without the knowledge of the Baghdad government.”
