Member of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, Bassem Anghimish Al-Gharibawi, confirmed that the government and parliament do not have any real information regarding the quantities of oil production and exports from the Kurdistan Region’s fields, noting that the relationship between Baghdad and Erbil remains complex and requires clear legal solutions.
Al-Gharibawi told Al-Maalouma Agency, “All previous agreements between the center and the region were temporary and patchwork, and did not lead to permanent legal solutions,” noting that “the region’s oil file has remained without real transparency throughout successive governments.”
He added that “the oil produced and exported in the region is unknown to the government and parliament due to the lack of information and oversight,” reiterating that “the oil relationship between the two parties requires legal solutions that guarantee the rights of all.”
It is noteworthy that Baghdad and Erbil announced last Thursday that they had reached an understanding regarding the region’s oil exports, in preparation for the resumption of exports through the “SOMO” company after a hiatus of more than two years.
