The US Republican representative has once again poked his nose into Iraq’s internal affairs, this time in an attempt to impose sanctions on Iraq by fabricating lies and justifications to seize Iraq’s resources under the guise of sanctions, in order to serve some of Washington’s agents inside Iraq. This intervention was not spur of the moment, but was preceded by interventions and the writing of reports on Iraq, describing it as a country occupied by Iran, inciting against its security forces, and attempting to destabilize the country’s internal stability.
“US Republican Representative Joe Wilson is a troubled figure who is being pushed around by the Kurdistan Region, especially the Barzani family, with whom he has ties,” Sabah al-Akili, a member of the Rights Movement, told Al-Maalomah. “Wilson’s threat to impose sanctions on Iraq represents a parliamentary opinion that has no value at all in US policy, even though this person often targets the Popular Mobilization Forces and the political process in Iraq. However, the issue should not be given too much importance at the diplomatic level.”
He added, “Wilson has previously stated that Iraq must be liberated from Iran. These are lies he fabricates in order to impose his dictates on Iraq. There is a strategic framework agreement between Baghdad and Washington, and America must respect such an agreement and not fabricate the issue of the bombing of oil fields in Kurdistan and hold the Popular Mobilization Forces responsible for it.”
On the other hand, Salam al-Zubaidi, a member of the Victory Coalition, confirmed to Al-Maalouma that “the law submitted by US Senator Joe Wilson under the pretext of ‘liberating Iraq from Iranian influence’ is nothing but an attempt to legitimize a new soft occupation by stripping Iraq of its resistance weapons in light of the escalating terrorist threats from ISIS, as well as the danger coming from Syrian territory.” He indicated that “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has affirmed on more than one occasion his categorical rejection of any foreign interference in Iraqi affairs.”
Al-Zubaidi explained that “the United States and Turkey are the most prominent countries that consistently violate Iraqi sovereignty, through military interventions or the imposition of political agendas, without facing any international deterrent.”
In a related development, the British newspaper The National reported that “ten Republican representatives signed a letter calling on Baghdad to sever its ties with the armed factions. They also called on Washington to designate several Iraqi military factions as terrorist organizations and suspend security assistance to Baghdad due to its recognition of these groups as part of the country’s security forces. Republican Representative Joe Wilson, the former chairman of the House Middle East Subcommittee, wrote to the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Brian Mast, demanding an investigation into former White House advisor Brett McGurk regarding his “failed” Middle East policies that, he claimed, have endangered US national security.”
Wilson claimed in a post on the XN platform, “Iraqi factions linked to Iran continue to launch drones against our friends in the Kurdistan Region with indirect support from the Iraqi government,” threatening to work to pass a law banning US funding to Iraq.
