MP Amer Abdul Jaber accused Kuwait on Sunday of “imposing a veiled economic blockade” on Iraq by controlling the Khor Abdullah port. He warned that some influential political figures are seeking to sell the Khor in exchange for “paltry sums” that serve their own interests.

Abdul-Jaber told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the continued Kuwaiti control of Khor Abdullah Port represents a strangulation of Iraq’s maritime economy and threatens its national security,” noting that “the official silence on this issue constitutes clear complicity.”

He added, “The documents and evidence recently presented to the regulatory and legislative authorities confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that Khor Abdullah falls within Iraqi sovereignty, and that relinquishing it constitutes a grave constitutional violation.”

He pointed out that “some political parties are trying to push through agreements that serve only the Kuwaiti side, in exchange for personal gains, at the expense of sovereignty and the national interest.”

This escalation comes amid ongoing parliamentary and popular demands for the Iraqi government to take a decisive stance on previous agreements and reopen the Khor Abdullah file in a way that guarantees Iraq’s maritime rights.
