A political source reported that the Baghdad Provincial Council will hold a special session this evening, Sunday, to elect a new governor. Meanwhile, the battle for the position intensifies between the candidates of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The Baghdad Provincial Council will hold a special session this evening to elect a new governor for the capital, and there are two candidates for the position.”
He added, “The competition is currently between the State of Law Coalition candidate, headed by Nouri al-Maliki, and the Development and Reconstruction Coalition candidate, headed by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.”
He explained that “Al-Maliki’s candidate for this position is the head of the parliamentary finance committee, Atwan Al-Atwani, while Al-Sudani’s candidate is provincial council member Dhu Al-Fiqar Thamer Al-Fayyadh.”
Yesterday, Saturday, President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid approved the retirement of Baghdad Governor Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi.
This is the second time Al-Alawi has been referred to retirement. The council previously voted to dismiss him on July 3, at which time Haider Mohan was elected as the new governor.
