Chinese direct exports to Iraq saw a significant increase during the first half of 2025, recording a 9.3% growth compared to the same period in 2024, and a 13.2% increase compared to the second half of the same year.

The Iraq Future Foundation for Economic Studies and Consultations said in a report published Thursday that the value of Chinese exports to Iraq during this period amounted to approximately $8.8 billion, compared to $8.1 billion in the first half of 2024 and $7.8 billion in the second half of 2024.

Machinery and electrical equipment topped the list of exported goods, accounting for 23% of total exports, valued at $2.1 billion, compared to $1.9 billion in the same period last year.

Exports of electrical and electronic appliances also rose significantly, reaching $1.4 billion, representing 15% of total exports, compared to $1 billion in the first half of 2024.

Chinese car exports to Iraq grew by 30%, reaching $638 million, up from $490 million during the same period the previous year.

Thus, the three aforementioned commodities constitute 47% of total direct Chinese exports to Iraq during the first half of 2025.

In contrast, total trade between Iraq and China during this period amounted to $26.6 billion, with Iraqi exports to China amounting to $17.7 billion, most of which was crude oil.

Despite this commercial activity, trade volume between the two countries declined by 3.3% compared to the first half of 2024, which amounted to $27.5 billion.

The trade surplus in Iraq’s favor reached $8.8 billion, a 21% decrease compared to $11.3 billion in the first half of 2024.

The report quoted the corporation’s chairman, Munar Al-Obaidi, as saying that this decline is attributed to the rise in the value of imports from China, compared to the decline in the value of Iraqi exports due to the decline in oil prices.
