Parliamentary Legal Committee Chairman Mohammed Anouz affirmed on Wednesday that relinquishing the Khor Abdullah port would undermine Iraq’s interests, noting that the issue poses a strategic threat to the country’s economic and sovereign security.
In a statement to Al-Maalouma, Anouz said, “Iraq has absolutely no interest in giving up Khor Abdullah Port, as it is a strategic seaport that represents the country’s economic lung.”
He pointed out that “any relinquishment of the Khor Abdullah port can only be interpreted as a huge strategic loss, striking at the heart of the Iraqi economy and opening the door to even more dangerous concessions in the future.”
Anouz explained that “the Khor Abdullah issue faces widespread rejection at both the popular and parliamentary levels, due to its implications for the state’s prestige and its weakening of Iraq’s geopolitical position in the Gulf.”
Khor Abdullah Port is one of Iraq’s most prominent ports overlooking the Arabian Gulf, and it is the subject of ongoing disputes related to border demarcation with Kuwait. Representatives and experts warn that any concession would represent an irreparable strategic loss.
