Shafaq News – Ankara
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a decree on Monday to terminate a historic oil agreement between Türkiye and Iraq after 52 years of implementation.
Turkish media reported that Erdogan signed an official decree terminating the crude oil pipeline agreement concluded between Turkey and Iraq in 1973. The agreement, which had been in effect for 52 years, is considered one of the most significant economic agreements between the two countries.
The decision was published in the Official Gazette of the Turkish State and bears the personal signature of the Turkish President.
According to the decision, the agreement concluded between Ankara and Baghdad will be officially terminated on July 27, 2026, in accordance with the decision issued in Issue No. 10113 of the Official Gazette. Thus, all additional protocols and documents related to this historic agreement will expire.
The origins of this agreement date back to 1973, when it was first signed between the two countries to secure the export of crude oil from Iraq to the Turkish port of Ceyhan. The agreement has been amended several times over the years, most recently in 2010, when it was extended for an additional 15 years, a period that will expire next year.
The termination of this agreement represents a strategic shift in economic relations between Türkiye and Iraq and may open the door to new negotiations regarding the future of oil exports and energy infrastructure between the two sides.
