The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced, today, Sunday, the commencement of floating and submerging the fourth concrete piece of the components of the submerged tunnel project in the Grand Faw Port.
The Director General of the company, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a statement received by / Al-Maalouma / agency, that “the process of floating and submerging the fourth concrete piece of the components of the submerged tunnel project in the Grand Faw Port has begun today,” indicating that “the submerging (sitting) phase is being carried out under direct engineering supervision, during which the piece was lowered to the bottom of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, using buoyancy, weight and balance control systems, until it settled accurately in its designated location within the tunnel path.”
He added that “submerging the fourth piece completes the equivalent of (693) meters of the length of the submerged tunnel with the Umm Qasr approach, and reflects remarkable progress in the project’s implementation schedule.”
The immersed tunnel at the Grand Faw Port is the first tunnel of its kind to be implemented using submersible cutting technology in the Middle East. It connects the two banks of the Khor Al Zubair Canal underwater, using a technique that assembles huge concrete pieces, which are precisely submerged in the seabed after being prepared inside a closed manufacturing basin.
