The Ministry of Transport announced, today, Sunday, that the Grand Faw Port is proceeding within the timetable set for its completion during the current year, noting that the financial and economic model for the development road project is in its final stages.
The ministry said in a statement received by / Al-Maalouma / agency, that “the General Company for Iraqi Ports has begun the work of floating and submerging the fourth concrete piece of the components of the submerged tunnel project in the Grand Faw Port, in its location under the Khor Al-Zubair Canal.”
He stressed that “after submerging the fourth piece, the length of the submerged tunnel that has been completed will be equivalent to (693) meters, which reflects remarkable progress in the project’s implementation schedule,” explaining that “the submerged tunnel in the Grand Faw Port is the first tunnel of its kind to be implemented using submerged section technology in the Middle East, as it connects the two banks of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal underwater, and is done using the technology of assembling huge concrete pieces, which are accurately submerged in the seabed after being prepared inside a closed manufacturing basin.”
He continued, “The five berths have been received and the 62 km-long connecting road has been completed, with a 100% completion rate,” indicating that “the container yard has exceeded 95%, while the navigation channel has reached 94%.”
The statement confirmed that “the port is on track for completion this year.”
He pointed out that “a plan has been drawn up to establish industrial cities along the development road corridor, in addition to a tourist coast, which will enhance investment opportunities and maritime tourism,” indicating that “the project includes the establishment of an integrated city within the port campus, with smart specifications, including residential, industrial and service areas, within the framework of a vision aimed at creating a sustainable and investment-attractive urban environment.”
He stressed that “the financial and economic model for the project is in its final stages and will be presented next Wednesday to the Council of Ministers, during the meeting of the Higher Committee for the Development Road, in preparation for the launch of the international investment phase.”
