Iraq is only one stage away from the implementation of Turkmen gasThe Ministry of Electricity confirmed on Friday that only one stage separates the entry into force of the Turkmen gas import agreement.

Ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa told the official agency, “The Ministry of Electricity has completed the administrative and financial procedures related to importing Turkmen gas, and we have obtained the approval of the Council of Ministers and a vote to activate the mechanism.”

He added, “We are awaiting the completion of the financial procedures related to the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI) regarding the opening of credits and the transfer of a portion of the funds, given that the agreement is within the framework of a prepayment mechanism for the transfer of funds in advance for gas payment. We are now awaiting the completion of these procedures to open and transfer the funds so that the agreement can enter into force and we can obtain Turkmen gas.”

Moussa pointed out that “there are joint efforts between the electricity and oil ministries to compensate for the shortage in Iranian gas supplies, and the operations room is in constant session regarding securing kerosene and fuel for the stations in accordance with Cabinet decisions.”

He continued: “The Council of Ministers approved the activation of the Turkmen contract, and the securing and construction of reservoirs in power plants for the gas needed to operate the plants, in addition to the continuation of the mechanism for exploiting national gas or dry gas from the Halfaya and Akkas fields for the benefit of power plants, while work continued to operate the plants with kerosene through a mechanism by which the Ministry of Oil imports gas to secure work for the plants, as well as the continuation of work on the public gas platforms in the Khor Al-Zubair port and projects to convert government buildings to solar energy,” noting that “there is coordination with the Ministry of Oil to obtain gas or alternative fuel until the issue of imported gas is resolved.”
