Republican U.S. Representative Joe Wilson called on Thursday to prevent Iraq from using oil funds deposited at the Federal Reserve, as part of pressure on Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to prevent attacks on foreign oil companies operating in the Kurdistan Region.
“Attacks by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias against US forces and US oil companies in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq will not be tolerated,” Wilson said in a post on the X platform, followed by Shafaq News Agency.
He added: “Iraqi oil money should no longer be used at the Federal Reserve, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani must take decisive action, or he will expose himself to dire consequences.”
In May 2003, the Security Council issued Resolution 1483, which stipulated that revenues from Iraq’s oil and gas exports be deposited into a special account at the US Federal Reserve under the name “Development Fund for Iraq.”
A portion of these revenues—5% of total oil and gas exports—was allocated to compensate Kuwait for damages resulting from the 1990 invasion. This continued until 2022, when Iraq completed reimbursement of approximately $52.4 billion.
