Information/Report…
Despite repeated statements by members of political blocs regarding the importance of the final legislative session of the fifth parliamentary term, current indicators confirm that this session will not differ significantly from previous sessions in terms of the lack of a quorum for sessions and the failure to pass important laws.
Several vital laws are awaiting passage by parliament during this final leg of the current session, which has spanned more than two decades. Most notable among these are the Oil and Gas Law, the Federal Sovereignty Council Law, the Federal Court Law, the Salary Scale Law, and other legislation related to important and sovereign ministries. These laws are of paramount importance in building a state of institutions and ensuring its stability.
Member of Parliament Kazem Al-Shammari confirmed that the upcoming legislative session will not witness significant legislative activity, whether in terms of interpellations or the passage of laws, due to the lack of the necessary political will.
Al-Shammari told Al-Maalouma, “I firmly believe there is a lack of seriousness in passing the laws, as the political forces’ efforts will be focused on preparing for the upcoming parliamentary elections, which will negatively impact legislative performance. It can be said that the fifth session is almost over.”
For his part, Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani called on parliament members to shoulder their national responsibilities and attend sessions during the final legislative term, stressing the importance of cooperation to ensure the continuation of a sound parliamentary process and the passage of overdue laws in the service of the people.
Al-Mashhadani said in a statement, “We call on all political blocs, their heads, members, and independent members to shoulder their national and historical responsibilities at this sensitive stage, and to work in a spirit of cooperation and integration to ensure the continuity of the parliamentary process and the approval of important laws that are still pending, given their direct impact on the lives of citizens.”
It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives issued the agenda for the first session of the final legislative term of the electoral cycle, which is scheduled to be held next Saturday, amid popular and political anticipation of what achievements it may result in, or the continuation of the stumbling.
