The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Tuesday that it is close to completing the largest container handling yard within the Grand Faw Port project, overlooking the Arabian Gulf, confirming that the completion rate has reached 94%.
Director General of Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The new yard will be capable of handling up to 3.5 million containers annually. It is designed to the highest technical and engineering specifications, keeping pace with the advanced requirements of the maritime transport sector.”
He added, “The project represents a qualitative leap forward in the work of Iraqi ports, especially as it is being built in a strategic location on the Arabian Gulf and constitutes a fundamental pillar of the Grand Faw Project, which is one of the largest development projects in the country.”
He explained that “the plaza area extends 2,000 meters in length and 600 meters in width, and massive backfilling work was carried out using more than 11 million cubic meters of materials to raise and stabilize the ground level, with the depth of the buried water ranging between 6 and 8 meters.”
He pointed out that “work is underway to complete the project according to the specified timetables, and it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, marking a qualitative shift in Iraq’s logistical and commercial capabilities.”
