Political expert Mohammed Dhari al-Dulaimi described the current parliamentary session on Friday as the weakest and most unsuccessful in more than two decades, holding the parliament’s leadership responsible for its complicity in ignoring corruption cases and its failure to fulfill its required oversight role.

Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma, “The current parliament is the worst since 2003. None of the important laws have been enacted, and no corrupt minister or official has been questioned, a dangerous indicator of the absence of oversight and legislative functions.”

He added, “The parliament’s leadership bears the brunt of this poor performance due to its subservience to political consensus, which has prevented the corrupt from being held accountable or parliamentary oversight mechanisms in place.”

He pointed out that “previous sessions, particularly the 2018 session, witnessed significant activity in the enactment of laws and the questioning of ministers, in contrast to the deliberate paralysis and clear legislative weakness we are witnessing today.”

Al-Dulaimi concluded by pointing out that “the Integrity Commission itself acknowledged the unprecedented spread of corruption after 2018, while the current parliament remained a bystander, making it a partner in the responsibility for the worsening corruption and the continued cover-up.”
