Minister of Agriculture Abbas Jabr al-Maliki revealed that Iraq has achieved remarkable progress in the agricultural sector, noting that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat, which has contributed to increasing the number of mills and providing hard currency.
Al-Maliki said in a televised interview followed by Al-Maalouma Agency, that “there are 13 basic agricultural commodities available locally and prohibited from import in support of national production,” indicating that “Iraq currently exports 11 agricultural products abroad, and its exports amounted to two million tons last year.”
He added, “The wheat crop is increasing every year, while only the paddy crop has been reduced within the agricultural plan, with the continued rise in palm cultivation, which currently exceeds 23 million palm trees.”
He pointed out that “local production has become desirable to Iraqi citizens, and that the Ministry of Trade was suffering from a problem with wheat storage capacities, but the production surplus has allowed Iraq to donate quantities of wheat to Lebanon and Gaza in response to appeals, and to provide large quantities locally.”
Al-Maliki concluded by pointing out that “there are major investment projects in the field of wheat and potato production, which will enhance the country’s food security.”
