The Supreme Judicial Council held a joint meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Council Chairman Faiq Zidane. The meeting discussed working mechanisms and adherence to jurisdiction in accordance with the constitution and laws.
The judiciary stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “Zaidan hosted judges from the Federal Court of Cassation, the Chief Public Prosecutor, the Head of the Judicial Oversight Authority, and the Federal Supreme Court, where the attendees congratulated the new Chief Justice, Judge Munther Ibrahim, on his appointment to the position.”
According to the statement, the new Chief Justice of the Federal Court also thanked the court’s members for rescinding their request for retirement after the reasons for doing so no longer existed.
The statement indicated that “the meeting discussed the mechanisms for sound judicial work and adherence to jurisdiction in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and applicable laws, as well as the importance of preserving the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and avoiding any behavior or practice that undermines this.”
The Supreme Judicial Council announced last Sunday the retirement of Judge Jassim Mohammed Abboud Al-Amiri, the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (Iraq’s highest judicial authority), for “health reasons.”
On June 19, the Federal Supreme Court witnessed the resignation of nine of its members, including six main members and three alternates. This came just hours before a crucial session was scheduled to decide on two sensitive issues: the Iraqi Ministry of Finance’s suspension of funding for the salaries of Kurdistan Region employees by the federal government, and the Khor Abdullah border crossing.
