Strategic expert Ibrahim Al-Sarraj criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to extend the state of emergency in Iraq on Monday, considering the decision a political pretext aimed at pressuring Baghdad to achieve narrow US interests, amid a “shameful” silence from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

Al-Sarraj told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the US decision to extend the state of emergency in Iraq, under the pretext that the situation continues to pose a threat to US national security, does not reflect the true reality within Iraq. Rather, it represents an attempt to impose political and economic tutelage over the country.”

He added, “Iraq today is experiencing a state of security and political stability, and there is no logical justification for linking its internal situation to a threat to US national security.” He explained that “such decisions aim to blackmail Iraq and pressure it on sensitive issues, such as the withdrawal of US forces or cooperation with some neighbouring countries.”

Al-Sarraj held the Iraqi Foreign Ministry responsible for “the silence and diplomatic absence in the face of such unjust decisions,” saying, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lacks neither the political acumen nor the political courage to respond to these ongoing insults, and has not even taken any media action to reject the decision or demand its repeal.”

He pointed out that “the repeated extensions of the state of emergency by the US administration are being used as a legal tool to justify interference in Iraqi affairs and the confiscation of its sovereign decision-making, which requires a firm Iraqi stance at both the official and popular levels.”

Former US President Donald Trump extended Executive Order 13303, which continued the state of emergency in Iraq, justifying his decision by stating that the situation in Iraq remains unstable and poses an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
