Representative Raed Al-Maliki confirmed on Sunday that referring the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court to retirement represents a “formal” step and is not justified from a realistic standpoint, questioning the announced reasons for the resignation, and considering it an “unreal pretext.”
Al-Maliki said in a statement received by Al-Maalouma Agency, “The Chief Justice is in good health, and there are no real obstacles preventing him from continuing in his position, which makes the referral decision raise many question marks,” noting that “this procedure may be a prelude to issuing a new decision on the Khor Abdullah case.”
He affirmed “Parliament’s support for the independence of the judiciary, and said: We will remain, as we have been, supportive of the judiciary and the Federal Court as a supreme and important institution in the state, and we will defend its independence and professionalism,” stressing “the rejection of political consensus prevailing over the work of the court.”
He continued: “We have had enough of the failure and blatant corruption that political consensus has produced in other state institutions.”
He pointed out that “the Federal Court’s stances in recent years have created opponents from various parties, from Kurds, Sunnis, and even Shiites,” explaining that “the Khor Abdullah case was one of the most prominent files that sparked controversy and led to widespread political tension.”
Al-Maliki concluded by hinting that “removing Judge Jassim Al-Amiri from the presidency of the court may be a deliberate step to pave the way for reversing the court’s previous decision in the Khor Abdullah case.”
