Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee member Ali al-Bandawi revealed on Saturday that Iraq is seeking to sign arms contracts with five countries to develop its air defense system.

Al-Bandawi told Shafaq News Agency, “Iraq needs an advanced air defense system to protect Iraqi airspace, skies, and territory from any foreign incursion or violation of Iraqi sovereignty.”

He added, “The Iraqi government has begun approaching five countries, including the United States, France, South Korea, and others, to sign contracts to import advanced weapons to arm the Iraqi army.”

He pointed out that “Iraq is preparing to sign contracts with several countries to import air defense systems and advanced radar equipment, in addition to other advanced weapons.”

During the Iran-Israel war, Iraqi airspace was subjected to numerous violations over a period of 12 days. However, Iraq deployed air defense systems near an oil field in the south of the country to protect oil facilities.
