Abdul Hamid al-Dulaimi, a member of the United Anbar Alliance, accused leaders of the Progress Party, led by former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, on Friday of embezzling billions of dinars during the first phase of the Anbar International Airport project, which is currently under construction.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “The first phase of the Anbar airport project, which is being built in an area 35 kilometers west of Ramadi, witnessed major financial corruption operations behind which were influential figures in the Progress Party.” He explained that “disagreements between the party’s leaders revealed the awarding of contracts to companies that did nothing on the ground, while huge sums of money disappeared without accountability.”
He added that “the central government halted funding for the project after funds allocated for the first phase were stolen, and postponed the launch of the second phase until those involved were identified,” stressing that “political pressure is being exerted to prevent oversight bodies from investigating the case and holding those responsible for the corruption accountable.”
Al-Dulaimi pointed out that “the Anbar International Airport project has become a front for exploiting political influence and collecting funds, without achieving any real progress on the ground,” calling on the federal government to intervene urgently to expose corruption and hold those involved accountable to protect public funds.
