Political expert Mohammed Al-Dhari accused the Kuwaiti government on Friday of conducting secret talks with Western and Gulf countries to gain international support for control of the Khor Abdullah seaport, despite the passage being Iraqi under international documents and treaties.
Al-Dhari told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Kuwait has conducted secret and unannounced contacts with senior officials from the United States, Britain, France, and a number of Gulf Cooperation Council countries, with the aim of pressuring the Iraqi Federal Court to overturn its recent ruling declaring the border demarcation agreements concluded with previous governments unconstitutional.”
He added that “these Kuwaiti moves aim to legally and politically manipulate border agreements, in an attempt to control strategic areas containing oil and gas fields, in addition to seizing control of Iraq’s only seaport,” describing these steps as “based on flimsy pretexts and not reflecting reality.”
Al-Dhari concluded by saying, “Kuwait’s orientation toward Western powers is a blatant attempt to pressure Iraq and steal its sovereign rights, in a political play that cannot be passed before the will of the Iraqi people and the decisions of its judicial institutions.”
