Information/Baghdad:
MP Haider al-Salami identified three strategic risks threatening Iraq’s future on Thursday if the Khor Abdullah Agreement continues to apply. He called on the Federal Court to proceed with its invalidation and reject the appeals filed by the Presidency of the Republic and the Prime Minister.
Al-Salami told Al-Maalouma, “Our rejection of the Khor Abdullah agreement and our call for the Federal Court to invalidate it stems from national principles based on accurate readings of the future and indisputable historical facts that confirm that Khor Abdullah is 100% Iraqi.”
He added, “Failure to nullify this agreement and yield to pressure from various quarters will lead to three dangerous consequences: first, the strangulation of Basra’s vital ports; second, the mortgaging of Iraq’s only waterway; and third, the creation of a major strategic problem that will distance Iraq from the Arabian Gulf, which is an international corridor for the transport of more than 90% of its exports and imports.”
Al-Salami pointed out that “the continuation of this agreement will lead to a crisis that will worsen over time, placing Iraq in a difficult position regarding its maritime and sovereign security.” He emphasized that “our rejection of this agreement is based on solid national foundations, and we look forward to the Federal Court issuing its decisive and final ruling on June 19th, ensuring Iraq’s interests in this vital geography.”
It’s worth noting that the Khor Abdullah Agreement concerns Iraq’s sole maritime corridor to the Arabian Gulf, and its implementation according to the current terms threatens all of Basra’s ports and creates a real strategic crisis.
